Saint Peter's Community Adult Day Care Center |
Since 1984, the Community Adult Day Care Center at St. Peter's has provided affordable social day care for seniors affected by stroke, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other physical or mental impairments. Frail, isolated or confused seniors need supervision and companionship to ensure their safety and to prevent rapid declines in physical and mental functioning.
Our Center is a meeting and greeting place for these special people. Many of the seniors who attend have formed close friendships with the men and women they have met here.
The Center is located in an older, two room schoolhouse, complete with the huge, sunny windows and big blackboards we all remember from our own school days. This special link between the past and present comes alive twice a month when third graders from the neighborhood school visit for intergenerational activities with our seniors. We also have monthly outings such as our "Summer Celebration Picnic," afternoon Oakland A's games, and "Pumpkin Pickin' at the Patch" in October. From time to time, local businesses and specialty shops give us tours of their stores and plants.
Our staff has CPR/First Aid training. They also receive special training in dealing effectively with the difficult behaviors manifested in individuals with dementia. Activity Directors are sensitive to agitation and wandering, and our program mixes physical and mental exercises, changing activities every thirty minutes to accommodate our participants' attention span. Quality activities, warm surroundings and a caring staff come together at the Community Adult Day Care Center at St. Peter's.
