Types of Care
In California, most types of Adult Day Services programs are licensed and regulated by the state. This ensures that individual programs fulfill the minimum definitions summarized below:
Adult Day Care (ADC) and Adult Day Support Center (ADSC) programs provide personal care and support, along with activities that stimulate adults physically, socially, intellectually and creatively. The California Department of Social Services licenses these centers as community-care facilities.
Social Day Programs provide recreational and therapeutic activities for adults and respite for caregivers. A license is not required for these programs.
Adult Day Health Care (ADHC) programs provide medical, rehabilitative and social services for adults who are at risk of institutionalization. The California Department of Health Services licenses these programs as health care facilities.
Alzheimer's Day Care Resource Centers (ADCRC) provide care for persons with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias, and support and education for caregivers and the community. County Area Agencies on Aging administer these programs. In Alameda County, the licensed Alzheimer's Resource Centers also maintain an Adult Day Health Care license.
Programs of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) provide 24-hour medical and long-term care for frail seniors who need nursing home care but want to remain at home. The Department of Health Services regulates these programs, which maintain clinic, home health and ADHC licenses.
